Music’s awesome, it’s the closest thing we have to magic (Mike Dirnt)

Gina’s dad is a self-taught musician. Last night I asked him about the workshops he gives. He showed me the latest musical instrument he has made. It consists of a wooden xylophone structure with a tin can, springs and wire. It produces the most amazing sounds. He explained how he represents the sounds of Nature that he hears into music. In his workshops, Carlo gets the students (most of them are music teachers themselves) to connect with their Inner Muse, Inner Spirit or Inner Child. Only once they have made that connection and released the theory of music that have been taught, can they begin to create improvised music from the soul. He explained how we need to reconnect with naivety and openness of childhood in order freely express ourselves.

Carlo Mombelli’s music is a delicious fusion of sounds, layered together in a sometimes cacophonous, sometimes harmonious, fascinating circle of Magic. I am in awe of his creativity.

I believe that Western society destroys that innate creativity that we all possess as young children, before we are “taught” the “right” way to do things. I delight in all things innocent and naïve, the raw creativity that has been hidden by layers of civilisation. We need to be aware of getting in touch with our Inner Child, our Spiritual Muse cloaked in layers of education and theory, which is the way of the West. Just get down and get (your hands, feet, and all your senses) dirty!
